FAQS

Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that may help address any queries you have.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Why is the 800g paper range, presently out of stock and what is the change situation forward?

The company has updated its obsolete packing equipment for this 800g range, and this has created a new fresh-looking range with a different bag film structure. The oats inside the bag are 100% the same spec, but the great thing is - they will now taste fresher, for longer!

There is presently a changeover process occurring within the retail trade (from old to new). There have unfortunately been some out of stocks experienced as this process runs through. This will largely be remedied across the network of grocery stores, by the end of October. For any specific questions on your local store’s stocking status, please email: info@harraways.co.nz and our helpful customer service team can assist you. We do thank you for your understanding and patience whilst this range update is occurring.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Full recyclability explanation for the fresh, new 800g bag specification?

Caring for the planet and keeping NZ clean is a key value for Harraways. This new bag range is soft plastic recyclable and once it is empty and clean, it can be deposited by you into one of the handy soft plastics recycling bins that will be in your local supermarket the next time you go grocery shopping. This recycling program is now running nationwide, and there is a bin every 20 kms throughout New Zealand. You will also have 100% confidence that your recycling is doing good with bin contents being reused to make things like plastic fenceposts for kiwi farms. For details on the program and your nearest bin, simply use your phone to scan the QR code on side of pack, or head to www.harraways.co.nz for details.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: The advantages of the Soft Plastics Recycling Program?

This solution is better for NZ and the planet, right now! Most current paper bags placed in kerbside bins end up in landfill in NZ, as local councils don’t presently have the ‘packaging end of life’ infrastructure to deal with it. So, it just gets dumped. With the soft plastics recycling scheme, we are giving precious resources another life and we KNOW all bin contents get recycled.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Can you please explain the new film change/specs/benefits?

The new film material is a low-density polyethylene laminate.

- The film is soft plastics recyclable. Head to: Recycling Kiwi (Click here) for full scheme details and your nearest recycling bin.

- The film is stronger/more durable than the old paper/plastic laminated bags.

- The film delivers a better moisture/oxygen barrier that keeps your oats fresher for longer – delivered from the film material itself and the heat sealing process that provides a more consistent, superior seal.

- For any specific questions, please email info@harraways.co.nz and our helpful team will assist.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: The silver lining on the film (inside) an explanation.

Whilst the inside of the fresh new film looks metalized, it is a food safe, sprayed on coating that assists the oxygen and moisture barrier. It is totally safe and 100% Soft Plastics Recyclable.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Further bag spec clarifications (resealing your bags)?

This matter was investigated comprehensively when the new bag spec was decided. No reseal-ability was provided for because:

- Adding a zip to each bag means the bag film cannot be recycled by you into SPRS bins.

- Customer universally did not see the value as they typically have both scissors & a clothes peg in their kitchen draw – so they can reseal that way & prefer a cheaper price.

- Or, customer typically dispenses their oats into a storage container that reseals.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Retail pricing situation.

Harraways does not set retail pricing. Our retail partners do. For pricing details, please head to your local retailer’s website (Woolworths/New World/Pak N Save) that provides all the specific retail pricing detail that you require. Pricing details (online) will begin to become evident from Monday 7th October 2024 – when the new bags begin to enter stores.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Outlining the New Fresh Bags' weight, sizing and a consistent uniformity across the range?

For several years Harraways has been giving you 50g extra at no extra charge (e.g. Rolled Oats 800g versus Scotch Oats 850g – line priced at store). This was a reality as old packing equipment filled bags based on volumetric height rather than net weight. This meant that the finer spec’d oat mixes (where more settles in each bag) needed to be packed to a slightly higher weight. New equipment now packs oats based on a unified 800g net weight. Retailers set the retail pricing and they have line priced this range fairly.

NEW FRESHER FOR LONGER, RECYCLABLE 800G BAG RANGE: Where is the Best Before Detail on the new bags?

Detail is ink jetted onto back of each bag, next to barcode.

Are oats gluten free?

It is impossible for oats to be genuinely gluten-free. Gluten is the name given to a protein found in barley, rye, oats and wheat.

The proteins are hordein (barley), secalin (rye), avenin (oats) and gliadin (wheat). According to Coeliac New Zealand, avenin is an essential part of oats. As avenin is gluten, oats can never really be gluten-free.

The current tests for gluten can measure gliadin, hordein, and secalin but not avenin as it is a slightly different protein.

So when people discuss gluten-free oats (and laboratories advise that oats are gluten-free) what should be said is that they are free from wheat (and rye, barley) gliadin, i.e. there is no measurable contamination.

Avenin is an essential part of oats (as gliadin is with wheat). Oats will never be gluten (i.e. avenin) free [even if they are described as gluten (i.e. gliadin) free].

For those who are Coeliac, we advise consumers to consult with their health professional about the consumption of oats.

A response from The Coeliacs New Zealand Incorporated June 2009, suggests that:

"While some Coeliacs can tolerate oats, others can’t so it’s therefore unwise for us to ever ‘recommend’ oats as we would not want to recommend to 20% of Coeliacs to get sick".

Are your oats chemical defoliant (e.g. glyphosate) free?

Harraways goal is to achieve zero glyphosate levels which is only achievable with the continued support and effort from contracted local growers. From 2019, Harraway & Sons Limited (Harraways) New Zealand grower contracts have included a clause stipulating no treatment with chemical defoliants and/or glyphosate, which is further supported by Harraways management undertaking frequent farm visits and participation at oat field days to educate growers on the subject.

For locally farmed oat skus, Harraways also undertakes frequent testing of both the oats when they arrive on site from farm (entering storage silos/pre milling stage) and within its’ finished product to ensure the integrity of this policy, with accredited laboratory test results confirming that Harraways local oat products are below ANZ permissible levels.

At this point [for locally farmed, Harraways branded oat skus] Harraways cannot provide an assurance of zero levels - as is its’ aim. This is because Harraways’ local grower’s farms are exposed to neighbouring properties and therefore spray residue and cross contamination is possible. This factor is out of the local growers’ control. Harraways “Organic” branded oats skus (Organic Rolled and Organic Wholegrain 800g) are ‘Bio Gro’ Certified - which means there is a guarantee of zero chemical defoliants (e.g. glyphosate).

These oats do come from Australian and/or Canadian Certified Organic farms and

are indeed more expensive per bag. This higher price per 100g is driven by the organic farming practices that drive - lower oat yields from the farm versus non-organic varieties, higher running/compliance costs and a more expensive freight component (being imported). These organically grown, BIO GRO certified oats are indeed carefully packed by Harraways here in NZ.

Where can I purchase bulk oats or other bulk milled cereals crafted by Harraways in Dunedin?

Harraways operates a B2B, wholesaling model presently whereby it only sells large bulk cereal orders directly to: Supermarket retailers, domestic health food retailers, foodservice distributors and agents, export brokers and other commercial food entities using oats/other flaked wholegrains within their added value/branded ranges.

We would advise that you contact two re-selling organisations that Harraways works with and look at their purchase pricing, minimum qtys, payment terms and range. They may be able to assist on a direct purchase for Harraways bulk oat & cereal products*. The two businesses are:

Davis Food Ingredients: https://davis.nz/

Bin Inn: https://www.bininn.co.nz/cereals-and-condiments

* Please note that there can be situations and/or areas where a certain branch of the above organisations may not stock Harraways products. To be sure we suggest checking carefully with the branch concerned

Where can I buy your Harraways branded, retail packed oats?

Most of of range is supported by both local Foodstuffs Stores (e.g. New World, Pak N save and Four Square) and Woolworths New Zealand Stores (e.g. Countdown, Countdown Online, Super Value and Fresh Choice (inc. Online)).

If you're unable to find in-store, please email info@harraways.co.nz(including details about the specific product you seek and where you live) and one of our helpful Harraways team members will do a more specific report search for you and email you back with some suggestions.

Fibre in oats

Fibre originates from plant-based foods and helps:

• Your digestive system to process food.

• To control the release of sugar into the bloodstream, which in turn may help control appetite.

There are two types of fibre:

• Insoluble fibre helps move food through your digestive system.

• Soluble fibre helps lower cholesterol re-absorption and helps control the release of sugar into the bloodstream. Oats are a good source in both soluble and insoluble fibre.

The nutritional data on the side of the pack will tell you the amount of fibre per 100g. Harraways Rolled Oats have 11.9g of fibre per 100g, including both soluble and insoluble fibre. This equates to 5.4g of fibre per 45gm serve. A product with at least 4g of fibre per serve is regarded as a good source of fibre.

One 45g serving of Harraways porridge will provide you with 21.6% (female) or 18% (male) of fibre needed by an average New Zealand adult each day as recommended by the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation.

See the recipe section for ways to include rolled oats in your meals, to increase your fibre intake.
